- WHEN: 5 Jun 2021, 06:00 pm until 09:00 pm
- WHERE: Old Government House
- HOW MUCH: Free
Starry-eyed wonderers are invited to a special evening of astronomy at Old Government House.
This event is being run in partnership with the Macarthur Astronomical Society and Greater Sydney Parklands.
Join us on the lawns around Old Government House to observe the southern skies next to the foundations of the original Parramatta Observatory.
Former resident, Governor Brisbane had a keen interest in astronomy and established an observatory next to Old Government House in 1821. Here, the first chart of stars in the southern hemisphere was compiled between 1821 and 1825, cataloguing over 7,500 stars.
For a gold coin donation, you will have the opportunity to view our southern stars in the same location as they were recorded 200 years ago.
There will be a talk about the history of the Parramatta Observatory, its construction and the instruments it housed, as well as information on how its remains are being conserved and interpreted today by the Parramatta Park Trust.
Bookings are essential, reserve your spot under the stars now!
Bookings are essential as attendance numbers will be limited to meet COVID-19 safety requirements. This is an outdoor event and we recommend you dress for the weather. In the event of wet weather or cloud cover, this event will be postponed. Please see the webpage for updates.
