The Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Information Centre, in conjunction with Parramatta Park Trust, runs regular guided tours of the Dairy Precinct on the second Saturday of each month at 11am and 12pm, and by appointment. Tours cost $12 and must be purchased through Eventbrite.
This is your chance to uncover and explore one of Australia’s oldest buildings. Take an exclusive and private tour at the Dairy Precinct in Parramatta Park and uncover the fascinating stories and historical, social and architectural importance to Australia.
Shortly after the arrival of colonists in 1788, the Europeans recognised the fertile site’s potential for growing crops to feed the starving colony.
Built in 1796, the Dairy Cottage was home to George Salter, an ex-convict turned cattleman. It later became part of Governor Macquarie's Domain, now on the World Heritage list.
In the early 1800s, the cottage was enlarged and converted to a dairy with a sunken milk-processing room constructed alongside. The milk room still remains today and can be viewed beneath the adjacent Ranger's Cottage.
You will be able to see Parramatta Park story unfold in a brand-new audio-visual exhibition inside these two important historic buildings.
It’s a fascinating glimpse into our colonial past and Parramatta’s significant Aboriginal history.
Due to the historic nature of The Dairy Precinct and fragile nature of the buildings, entry to the cottages is limited to small groups of no more than 15 at a time. There are also uneven surfaces inside the cottages and surrounding gardens, paths and entries that may cause trips, slips or falls.
A number of areas in the Dairy Precinct have limited accessibility. If you have special access requirements, please contact the Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Information Centre on 02 8839 3311.
Please note there are no amenities at the Dairy Precinct; the nearest bathroom facilities are located at Coleman Oval.
