Transforming walking and cycling in Parramatta Park

We’re transforming walking and cycling for the benefit of the community and visitors in World Heritage-listed Parramatta Park.

The People’s Loop is an exciting and innovative long-term plan to remove the majority of vehicles from within the core of the Park, returning this space to the community for recreational use.

By moving cars to the edges of the park we will provide a better and safer experience for park visitors by creating a wider and more generous pedestrian and cycling loop. This will reduce conflict between different users and modes of transport; and enhance the significant cultural and heritage landscape of the park for generations to come.

We first consulted the community on the People’s Loop concept in 2015, and again in 2019 during the preparation of the ‘Your Parra Park 2030’ Plan of Management.

In 2020, the People’s Loop was tested in a two-month trial during COVID-19 restrictions and our survey during the trial showed overwhelming community support for the project.

By listening to feedback from the community, we identified the need to maintain sufficient car parking close to park facilities; as well as provide additional parking spaces for seniors and people with physical impairment.

In July 2020, Parramatta Park Trust received $2.5 million to deliver Stage 1 of the People’s Loop, specifically for improvements in the West Domain area. Stage 1 commenced in November 2021.

The People’s Loop will be delivered in future stages as funding becomes available.
